Do I need Making Tax Digital software if I am self-employed?

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with gross income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC four quarterly updates plus a year-end declaration using MTD-compatible software. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and is proposed at £20,000 from April 2028.
